The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) held a nationwide referendum on Tuesday 5th February, 2019 to decide whether or not to suspend its three month strike.

It was reported that over 200 members of ASUU attended the congress at the university of Ibadan and voted for the continuation of the strike while a little above 50 voted for suspension with conditions.

Dr Deji Omole, Chairman of University of Ibadan told Vanguard that the congress only conducted referendum on the offers of government saying the congress is the principal which guides the leadership of the union on their struggle.

The Chairman stated that the Federal Government had promised to include earned academic allowances in their 2019 salaries.

Furthermore, Dr Omole said the Federal Government had decided to release N25bn for University revitalisation while the rest would be released after identifying sources to fund it.

According to Omole, the Federal Government has agreed that renegotiation should commence and end within six weeks.
